NAM (A poem for Vets)
NAM
By: Phil Machalick
I core two core three core four
the stench when we landed and opened the door
felt like a furnace when we got off the plane
doing my time no need to complain, Nam
My buddies beside me the point man and rear
the commander and commo the doc are all here
tripwires flares claymores and rounds
incoming shells that blew holes in the ground, Nam
Five hot meals out of 365
it was the grace of God that kept me alive
the shelling stopped and quieted down
exhausted from war as we slept on the ground, Nam
When morning broke and the dust off came
we loaded them up with the dead and the lame
pulled off the crates some food and supplies
as they revved up their engines and starred a goodbye, Nam
Those back home just have no clue
the horrors I've seen and what I've been through,
Nam
